Hillbilly, There are several posts on the subject of chains on this board. For eg; check out last November/December some of the same questions were asked and answered. It all comes down to what will work best for you in the situation that you are working in.I have found that TRYGG TRACTOR chains give me the best allround performance in snow,ice and mud.I cut alot of hard wood in hilly country using a JD 1070 MFWD and chains are a must. I have them on the rear only because I'm afraid of puting too much strain on the front end(these things really get a bite).

CW,according to my JD Tractor book (1918-1994)
At the time they were tested at the Nebraska Test Center, the 1250,1450 and 1650 Tractors set nine records for fuel efficiency and lugging ability. The 1650 was the most fuel-efficient tractor ever tested, regardless of horsepower.
The 1450 ranked number one among "currently available" tractors in the 45-to 55-hp class.
In the category for 35-to 45-hp, the 1250 offered the greatest lugging ability at 80% of rated engine rpm among tractors tested at this time.
The 1250 was powered by a naturally-aspirated 143 cu.in.3-cylinder diesel engine, while a 190 cu.in.4-cylinder diesel powered the 1450 (naturally aspirated) and 1650 (turbocharged). All three models had 3-range sliding-gear collar-shift transmissions giving nine forward and three reverse speeds.
The 1250 was rated at 40.70 PTO hp, the 1450 at 51.39 PTO hp, and the 1650 at 62.22 PTO hp.

John, I have them on the rear only on my JD1070 mfwd and have been able to go anywhere I wanted to in the woods. I'm affraid that if used on the front they may put too much strain on the front end because they really get a grip.On occasion I've used the diff.lock but most times just haul along in 4 wheel drive.

Eric, I bought a 1070 with 1020hrs. on it and it still had that sharp sound that you refer to. I have since put on 50 more hrs.using it only on weekends and I am very satisfied with the perfomance.All the power I need with great manoeuvrability and I sure love that MFWD.

Tom, I had the same problem with this same Bush Hog behind a JD1070 38hp and found out that I wasn't running the PTO fast enough. I started at 1500 engine rpm and those shear pins snaped off like tooth picks as soon as I hit any thing over an 1 1/2 in. When I told the fellow that I had borowed the cutter from what was happening he said "y'a gotta spin 'em pretty good to make 'em cut".I cranked the rpm up to 2500 and never broke another pin and I cut 2 1/2 in.stuff with ease.Just make sure that there is no one standing near you while you're working. It is surprising how far stuff will fly out from under thoes cutters. DAVE!!

Jim, the 1070 is rated at 35hp (pto) and weighs in at 4800 lbs. with cab and loader. The 351 winch is rated at 7000 lbs.of pull.I have pulled the tractor toward the logs on ocasion even with the brakes set and the blade on the winch buried in the ground.I would think that the 351 would be too much for the lighter 4300. DAVE!!

Chris, the check valve is leaking.At the rate that your unit is dropping it is not just dirt in the fluid.I had the same problem on one of my JD tractors and the valve had to be replaced because it was badly scored.The valve seat also had to be cleaned up.It's not brain surgery just time consuming. Get the service manual and study it before you start.Flush all the fluid and replace with new and change the filter as well. The 3 Pt. with attachmennt should stay in any position that you set for days. DAVE!!
